Day 120: a bucket

30.04.14: the end of another month. Probably another obvious choice for the theme-o-da-day featuring the boss. Not sure if we have actually made too many sandcastles but I know she loves the idea of them...

Unga is flying the Swedish flag for my grandmother whose birthday it would have been tomorrow. Very few days go by without me thinking of her or quoting her.

Best wishes for May and for those of you who have tomorrow off, I am not jealous...at all...

Day 119: ointment

29.04.14: yet again understanding comes with requirements. If you don't have kids in your household or you don't watch Disney Junior, there is no point in even trying to explain. If you do have kids in your household and you do watch Disney Junior, there is absolutely no need to explain.

Granted the boss does not say "oinkment" but it sounded like something she would say. And between this drawing and day 110, I am never seeing this book again...

Day 117: a geode

27.04.14: yeah, I had to look this one up before I began. Wikipedia describes them as
  1. "Geodes are geological secondary structures which occur in certain sedimentary and volcanic rocks. They are themselves of sedimentary origin formed by chemical precipitation."
For us normal mortals, they basically are beautiful crystals found within volcanic rocks... Or something like that...

Why I decided to throw inJon's secretary, Miss. Hills, in the background, I could not tell you...

And starts another week. Have a great week.

Day 116: a phone booth

26.04.14: my wife always says "give yourself a break, just draw the [theme of the day] without complicating it!" So that's what I did tonight: Jon Pay making a call in a phone booth

Day 115: a melting candle

25.04.14: in detective and gangster stories you should always when dining by (melting) candlelight in a Italian restaurant...

     Have a great weekend.

Day 114: a log

24.04.14: today I have an idea I liked but not completed to a level I am happy with. The idea was to have poor Gus returning to his homeland of Scotland just to be mocked by his older for not being able to successfully complete a log toss (not even being able to lift the log...). Unfortunately Gus looks more like he is getting electric shock from the log more than trying to lift it...

This was also my first attempt at drawing one of Gus' sibling. I always knew he had at least two brothers but that's as far as the MacDugal family tree has been planned. I do have a story idea where Jon and Gus go to Scotland. Gus becomes a wanted man for an extremely elaborate crime and Jon has a to clear his name. Again, I may have said too much...

Day 113: an accordion

23.04.14: this is called having a silly idea and wanting to get some sleep!! I have nothing against accordion music (I mean, Weird Al Yankovic's accordion medelies are awesome!!) but there was something about this idea that made me smile... Hope it has the same effect on you...

Day 112: a lock

22.04.14: the amazing Henry Hooiini being locked up by a random volunteer from the audience and about to preform his unbelievable upside-down escape trick. Will he pull it off?

Day 111: worst enemies

21.04.14: okey, I had a tough choice in this one. It was either the Boss and her hated enemy, vegetables, or the above. I went with the above.

And what is the above, you ask... Well, that is Jon Pay facing of his worst enemy Smiling Frankie Cunzo and some if his hoods; Buck-Shot, Tubby, Brick and the Babyface (all from Bullets, Babes & By-lines). Loves drawing these goons, and they will return. Have the script all ready to go, courtesy of Doc Monster!!

     Back to work tomorrow...

Day 110: best friends

20.04.14: this was a no brainer.

This one goes out to my wife. She puts up with me spending anywhere from fifteen minutes to two hours a night sketching and posting these drawings. When I did the first drawing of the boss back on day 22, she told me I didn't draw our daughter cute enough. Now several drawings later, she loves it when I draw the boss and her little cuddly toy (who goes EVERYWHERE with us!!). So when the theme if best friends come up, we both know what and/who I was drawing. Honey, thanks for supporting me in this project even when you think I am crazy or when you know I should go to bed instead of drawing. This one's for you and the boss (and of course Unga. We can not forget Unga!!) Thank you.

Day 109: noodles

19.04.14: guess it could be argued that spaghetti with meatballs don't classify noodles but that's what I went with. This also concludes a double page spread of sketches featuring the boss.

Not sure how I feel about the fact that nobody (including myself) noticed that both the last two days were numbered 107... Oh, well...

Day 108: tangled ribbons

18.04.14: the boss getting tangled up in her present wrapping... I should focus more on my drawings than watching Elementary while sketching...

Day 107: girlish laughter

17.04.14: the "boss" is 3+ years old, so this is often how it is in our house; it's either not funny or (as is the case here) there is no joke. That does not mean there won't be girlish laughter ringing through the house, not to mention squeals, screams and giggles, but a lot of laughter too...

Day 106: a book

16.04.14: perfect excuse to continue Professor Boekenschroefdraad's dialog from day 101. I also got to draw one of my favorite things: books!! I stayed with just one book as I promised my wife to not draw another library...

And by the by, Professor Boekenschroefdraad and la Journal de Méthodiquement Frère Fou actually has a story behind it. It is actually the book Magpie (see day 85, 71, 52 and 18) steals in Tears on Rain Street... Ehm... I may have said too much...

Day 105: a thumb

15.04.14: yep, bizarre!! Look up Thumb Wars, Blair Thumb Project and possiy even FrankenThumb and it might make more sense, but I doubt it...

Day 104: a squirrel

14.04.14: I watched the latest version of the Three Musketeers last night while drawing the Camlfire and for some reason when it was time to come up with something for a squirrel, this it what came out. A cross between the squirrel from Disney's Sword in the Stone (thanks to Andreas Deja's blog andreasdeja.blogspot.ie) and D'Artagnan...I'm gonna stop talking now...

Day 103: a campfire

13.04.14: had to do better than yesterday, so I just used a lot of graphite. Makes it look like I've put a lot of work in to it...which I may or may not have done...

     Best wishes for the week!!

Day 102: a ponytail

12.04.13: not gonna say too much on this one because I'll start making excuses... Hope you like it...

Saturday, April 12, 2014

Day 101: a spiral staircase

11.04.14: I was early yesterday so I figured it be ok to be a little late today. Just like the idea of showing Professor Boekenschroefdraad walking  down the staircase of his library. Grand enough?

     Have a great weekend!

Day 100: Japan

10.04.13: ...day 100... I thought I'd fold before day 50...

Had to go a little big (and a little cliché) and Japan was a bit of an inspiring theme.

I started this challange because I had not been drawing for quite a while and I was really struggling to come up with any creative thoughts or ideas. I am now drawing something every day and the creative juices are again flowing; some new characters have been created (some as a direct result of this blog) and there is movement in the production of Jon Pay PI: Prizefighters & Knickerbockers, it's slow movement but considering the fact that it's about a year since I touched it, I'll take it!! In other words; it works!!

I also want to say a big thank you to everybody whose supported and encourage me. I hope I can present to you at least anthor 100!!

     Thank you!

Day 98: a barbell

08.04.14: I love it when a Gus-idea is what presents itself. You know it's gonna be silly, crazy and fun. So, yes, this is Gus attempting to lift a barbell that was about ten times as much as he weight...

Now, for the day 100- conflict: draw my pic or go see Captain America...? Any advise?

Day 97: a ripe banana

07.04.14: a hack job or the insanity continues? You decide! And I'd be pressed for an answer if Banana Bones the bank robber asked me this at banana-point... How 'bout you?

Sunday, April 6, 2014

Day 96: swim feet

06.04.14: no, you are not missing the joke... I don't think there's a joke to miss. Had no idea what to draw so I went for the bizarre, so yes, that is a gentleman dressed up for the night with tails and swim fins, and he does need that walking stick as one leg is bigger than the other (by accident...). You get the joke, you explain it to me...

     Have a great week!!

Day 95: a cinder block

05.04.14: okey, there is one major flawed detail in this one, but I am really happy with this one. I like the idea and the execution. And, hey, it is better than my first idea which was to draw a "portrait" of a cinder block...

Day 94: a T-shirt

04.04.14: this one goes out to anybody who dreamed of being superman!! (And yes that is his mum and some paint buckets in the background.)

     Have a super weekend!!

Day 92: a paw print

02.04.14: I did not set out to have this be a Disney/Pixar page (see below)...

I think this is by far one of the coolest title logos Disney has ever done. It's from the movie Brother Bear that deserves way more credit than I believe it got. And as previously it was the first thing that popped in my head when I read the theme of the day. Not very original, but it was still an interesting exercise.

Here's all the four Disney/Pixar inspired/ripped off pieces as they look in the book, side by side:

Day 91: a helmet

01.04.14: continuing my page of (Disney/)Pixar tribute/inspiration with this piece that showcases goggles and glasses more than the helmet... Anyway, one of the greatest adventurers of our time and I do believe my favorite line from the movie!

Hope you weren't fooled too badly today...
